Power is the product of voltage and current in DC. On AC, the product of volts and amps gives apparent power (VA) unless you include power factor—real watts = volts × amps × PF. Unity power factor means current and voltage are in phase, typical of heaters and incandescent bulbs.

Worked example: 12.5 A at 120 V
A clamp meter reads 12.5 A on a 120 V AC resistive circuit (power factor 1.0).
- Watts = 12.5 A × 120 V × 1.0 = 1,500 W real power.
- That matches a typical 1,500 W space heater on a 15 A circuit.
- On 12 V DC at 12.5 A: watts = 12.5 × 12 = 150 W—same current, ten times less power at lower voltage.
- If the load were a motor at PF 0.8: watts = 12.5 × 120 × 0.8 = 1,200 W real, even though apparent VA is 1,500.
Practical tips
- Clamp meters often read RMS amps—pair with voltage and PF for watts, not VA alone on AC.
- For DC battery loads, amps × volts gives power directly at the bus voltage.
- Sum individual load watts after conversion when planning inverter or generator capacity.
- Motor starting current is higher than running amps—do not use surge amps for steady watt estimates.
- Lower PF means fewer real watts for the same amp draw—important for generator and UPS sizing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the amps to watts formula?
DC: watts = amps × volts. AC: watts = amps × volts × power factor. Example: 10 A at 120 V DC is impossible on standard mains—on 12 V DC, 10 A = 120 W. On 120 V AC at PF 1, 10 A = 1,200 W.
What is the difference between watts and volt-amps?
Volt-amps (VA) = volts × amps on AC without power factor. Watts = real power = VA × PF. This calculator outputs watts (real power). For apparent VA, multiply amps × volts only—useful for sizing transformers, not for energy consumption.
When should power factor be 1?
Use PF = 1 for all DC circuits and for resistive AC loads (heaters, toasters, incandescent lights). Use a lower PF for motors, compressors, and some LED drivers when you want accurate real watts from an amp measurement.
Can I use this for solar panel current?
Yes. Multiply string current (amps) by operating voltage to estimate DC watts at the MPPT input. Use Voc or Vmp as appropriate for the calculation you need—operating watts typically use Vmp × Imp.
How does this relate to watts to amps?
They are inverses. Watts to amps divides power by voltage (and PF). Amps to watts multiplies current by voltage (and PF). Use whichever direction matches the values you measure.
Why do my watts seem low on a motor circuit?
If you used PF = 1 but the load is a motor, real watts are lower than volts × amps. Measure or estimate power factor (often 0.7–0.9 for small motors) and re-enter, or use a watt meter for direct real-power reading.
