How this calculator works
- Enter total monthly kWh from your meter or bill.
- Set tier 1 limit (kWh) and tier 1 $/kWh—the rate for usage up to that cap.
- Set tier 2 $/kWh for all kWh above the tier 1 limit.
- Enter fixed monthly charge (customer/service fee) and tax percent if applicable.
- Energy cost = sum of (kWh in each tier × tier rate). Total bill = (energy + fixed) × (1 + tax ÷ 100).

Tiered tariffs price the first N kilowatt-hours cheaply and charge more beyond that cap—encouraging conservation or reflecting utility cost structure. The calculator allocates your total kWh across tiers in order, multiplies each block by its rate, then adds unavoidable fixed charges. Tax applies to the subtotal if your jurisdiction taxes electricity bills that way.

Worked example: 850 kWh month
You used 850 kWh. Tier 1 covers first 500 kWh at $0.12/kWh; tier 2 is $0.18/kWh. Fixed charge $12, tax 8%.
- Tier 1 energy = 500 × $0.12 = $60.
- Tier 2 energy = (850 − 500) × $0.18 = 350 × $0.18 = $63.
- Energy cost = $123. Subtotal = $123 + $12 fixed = $135.
- Total bill = $135 × 1.08 = $145.80 with 8% tax.

- Copy tier limits and rates from your utility rate schedule PDF, not memory.
- Solar net metering may credit at different rates than you pay—bill modeling can differ from simple offset.
- Crossing a tier boundary makes marginal kWh expensive—reducing usage from 510 to 490 kWh can save more than average rate suggests.
- Fixed charges still apply with solar; factor them into payback separately from energy offset.
- Time-of-use (peak/off-peak) plans need weighted average rates or a different model—this tool uses monthly total kWh only.

What is a tiered electricity rate?
A tiered (or inclining block) rate charges one price per kWh for the first block of monthly usage and a different—usually higher—price for additional kWh. Example: $0.12 for first 500 kWh, $0.18 thereafter. Enter your utility's blocks as tier 1 limit and two rates.
Where do I find total kWh?
On your utility bill: current meter read minus previous read, or the stated "kWh used" for the billing period. Smart meters often report daily kWh in the utility app—sum a month or use the billing statement total.
What is the fixed charge?
